NEW DELHI: The Union Health Ministry sought to reassure the public on Friday regarding the recent reports of a Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) outbreak in China, emphasizing that there is no immediate cause for concern in India.
“At present, there are reports circulating about an HMPV outbreak in China. However, we have thoroughly analyzed data on respiratory infections within India, and there has been no significant increase in cases, particularly in the month of December 2024. Moreover, no large-scale outbreaks have been reported from any of our medical institutions,” said Dr. Atul Goel, the Director-General of Health Services (DGHS).
He further noted that, as with any winter season, there is typically a rise in respiratory infections, but the country’s hospitals are well-equipped with adequate supplies and sufficient bed capacity to handle such situations.
“We are fully prepared to manage the usual seasonal surge in respiratory infections, and there is no need for undue alarm at this time,” Dr. Goel reassured.
He also urged the public to continue following standard health precautions, especially during the winter months. Those experiencing symptoms such as coughs or colds were advised to avoid close contact with others to help prevent the spread of infections.
